TSM Outfit Post: Wedding love in BCBGMAXAZRIA Aqua Karey Lace Dress

I had forgotten what it felt like to have the strong Australian sun rays beam down against my pasty Britain-ised skin and being back in Melbourne for a very quick trip I took full advantage of the sun, prancing around in shorts and tank tops at every opportunity to ensure that every inch of my body including my toes could boast a shade greater than ‘stark white’ upon my return to a freezing snowy London.

Back for a brief trip to settle plans and visit my family, the timing was on our side for once and we had the pleasure of attending my friend Poosilla’s wedding (You may remember the gorgeous Poosilla from a styling session I posted a little while back here). Living overseas over the past few years, we’ve missed so many of our close friends’ weddings with much regret and it felt really great that were able to attend a wedding this visit around.  Weather wise, you could not have asked for a perfect day; the sun shone (perhaps a little too strongly I retrospectively say with newly sunburnt shoulders) which led to a perfect evening sunset backdrop by the water overlooking St Kilda beach for the reception. The bride and groom are  now celebrating on their very well deserved honeymoon after a very stressful lead up the wedding, moreso than your average wedding after the groom took ill a few days before the wedding and was only released from hospital on the morning to attend the wedding.

The last wedding I attended was in Melbourne 2.5 years ago when I was a bridesmaid for my friend and so I was kind of excited about getting dressed up for a wedding. I am a huge romantic at heart and love weddings; there’s something really special and joyous about witnessing two people you know publicly celebrate their commitment to one another. Whether the wedding reminds attendees of what’s to come or what they themselves have also committed to, weddings are a great opportunity to let loose and just have some fun!

I decided to wear a long dress for the wedding; something light and comfortable that would hide a potential food baby and the fact that I had quite pasty white legs. I saw this BCBG dress in John Lewis a few months back and thought it would be a perfect evening gown but with a price tag of £300+ I hastily put it back down.

Excuse the wrinkles at the bottom of my dress 😛 The dress was an absolute dream to wear and the colour seemed so fresh and happy. I have a weakness for lace so the deep V sheer lace back and shoulder and waist lace trimmings were my favourite features of the dress as well as the back slit which made it very comfortable to walk all day. The only downside to the dress it that you can’t wear a conventional bra with it so stick on chicken fillets were the way to go! Looking back at the photos, I can see it being a perfect evening dress or maybe a bridesmaids dress option for any brides-to-be out there. Last season the dress was available in a Turkish Rose colour which is also very striking so if you like the dress I’m sure BCBG will bring it back in new colours too.

I love the dresses from high street , especially as one of my favourite fashion characters Ashley Davenport often dons them on TV show, Revenge. Knowing that it was a US brand, I found the dress for $300 USD from their website (how the UK jacks up the price is beyond me!) but it was still expensive and seeing as they didn’t ship internationally, I was turned to good old eBay. I managed to snap up this brand new (still with tags) BCBG dress for under $120 AUD. Bargain if you ask me :)

It was a wonderful day spent catching up with friends and celebrating and it was such a pleasure to be able to attend. I received a lot of questions about my dress so hopefully this answers them all but let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know :)

  1. Hey Tien! Great choice and that is an ahhhhmmmaazzzinng and lovely dress!! I wish I have a quarter of your patience and determination when it comes to bargain hunting.

  2. Hi Tien, Absolutely love the dress on you! You look stunning!! BCBGMAXAZRIA always does the nicest evening dresses from what I’ve seen. I just want to ask how do you find their sizing? Are you wearing size US0 or US2? Thanks!! x

    • Aww Thanks Kristy! Their sizing for evening dresses are a just slightly on the larger size. I’m usually a size 6 and I’m wearing a size US 0 in the dress. It was miles too long so I had to get it taken up. I’d say the US size 0 would fit a AUS size 6 and small size 8. BCBG also do a lot of bandage dresses and I remember trying on an XS or 0 and it was way too tight to even get up past my thighs so if you’re looking at their bandage clothing definitely size up! I hope this helps hun :)

  3. gorgeous look! I have a bcbg in my city (dress on sale for 130 CAN!) and was wondering if you think it would make a good grad dress in june? how was the material in warm weather? thanks!

    • I wore this dress on quite a warm day and it was perfect because the fabric was breathable and flowly and its not very clingy so I think it should be fine weatherwise for June in Canada :) Are you planning to wear to the Graduation party ? There’s also a shorter variation of the dress as well that could be suitable as well if you want something less formal. I hope this helps :)

  4. I just bought this dress on sale ($130 USD) @ Macy’s in Chicago for an upcoming gala. Dreaming about possible shoes and earrings to go with it, I used google.images to find photos of people wearing the dress… leading me to your blog! It was great to see it on someone else and to get some ideas from your accessories. I’ll definitely be following your blog from now on.

    • Aww Yay! It’s such a gorgeous dress. You’re going to look like the belle of the ball I’m sure! I also contemplated accessorising the dress with white or neon coloured statement jewellery too so something for you to consider if you can’t find anything. H&M always have such affordable costume jewellery :) Thanks for following Lauren xo

  5. The dress looks so amazing on! I have a wedding end of this year, hopefully I can find something as gorgeous as this.

Oh and is that Elle I see hehe

  6. I got this dress recently for my senior prom and absolutely love it! But I don’t know how to style my hair or where to find a great clutch to go with it. It looks so great on you and I was wondering if you could give me some tips on hair, makeup, or accessories? Hopefully it’ll look as good on me as it does on you!

    • Hi Danielle! It will look perfect for your senior prom :) I think to show off the lace detail in the back it would be nice to have your hair up or perhaps curled and pinned to the side (cascading in the front) as an alternative option and if you have long hair. I wanted to keep my accessories to a minimum but then got a bit carried away with the earrings and matching clutch but I think it’s best to either wear nice dangly earrings or a statement necklace (but not both). I nice sequinned clutch would be really practical (to keep you lipgloss, phone, keys and camera in) and for make up a nice light grey smokey eye would look really nice too. I think the dress speaks for itself so you don’t need to do too much more. I hope you have a wonderful time!

      • Thank you so much! This was so extremely helpful I’ve been so lost with what to do about this stuff and now I know exactly what i want, thanks again! (:

  7. Hi! I just bought this dress in the Turkish Rose colour on eBay for my graduation. I also got the 0, and I noticed in the comments you said you had to get it shortened – so how tall are you? Just wondering if I’ll have to get it fixed! Thanks!

  8. Hi, I love this dress! I might be getting this dress in the Turkish rose color for prom :) I was just wondering (before I order), how long is this dress? Because I’d hope that it touches the floor, but I’m not sure if that’s the case (from your pictures). How tall are you?! Thanks :) PS it looks gorgeous on you! :)

    • Hi Elsie – Thank you :) I don’t have the measurements now that I’ve shortened the dress but I am 1.65m and I had to cut off at least 15cms off it and could still wear heels. I hope that helps :)
